Aveiro - Agueda Umbrella Sky Project

After saying good bye to wonderful Lisbon, I start traveling to my next destination, Aveiro. It is the port town located in the middle coast side of Portugal. The main reason to visit here was to go to see the super photogenic event, Umbrella Sky Project held in 40 mins away by train from there.

I was a bit nervous to take long distance train trip at first, but since I've been trained in crazy Tokyo transportation, it wasn't confusing at all I realized. CP took me Aveiro clearly safely.

Next day, I went to Agueda. I bought a train ticket at ticket window and waited at platform... then, the train fully covered by dirty spray doodle came. I again got totally nervous to take this insecure looking thing but it actually was OK, there's nothing to scare.
After about 10 mins from the station, I found the event.

(As for as I know, Portugal was not that hot but) I heard they started this umbrella event to avoid the summer hotness or town development. It was such a beautiful event with hundreds of umbrellas displayed up in the sky instead of arcade. The contrast with these umbrellas and traditional Portugal landscape was so colorful and breathtaking beautiful.
During my lunch with real espresso, I tried to seize the moment by drawing.

楽しかったリスボン生活に別れを告げ、次の目的地アヴェイロへ。アヴェイロはポルトガル中部に位置する小さな港町。そしてこの街に訪れる一番の目的は、そこ電車で４０分くらいのところにあるアゲダにて行われているUmbrella Sky Projectというフォトジェニックなお祭りを見に行くためだ。

初めての電車による長距離移動に緊張していたが、東京で長年修行を重ねて着た私にとって、ポルトガルの交通はそこまで強敵ではなかった。CPに乗り込みしばらくすると、アヴェイロに到着。

翌日、天気も良かったので早速アゲダへ出発。窓口で切符を手に入れ、いざ乗り込もうとすると…スプレーの落書きだらけの非常に治安の悪そうな２両編成の電車がやって着た。結果、見た目は恐ろしいけど別に普通の電車だということがわかる。
駅からおおよそ直進で１０分くらい歩いたところで、そのイベントは行われていた。

（私の経験では、ポルトガルの夏はそこまで暑くはないのだが…）聞くところによるとあまりの暑さにこのようなイベントを始めたとの一節もあるらしいが、小さな商店街にて、アーケードの代わりに色とりどりの傘がディスプレイされているというお祭りだ。
空一面に吊るされた傘はそれはそれは色鮮やかで、もともと色彩豊かなポルトガルの街並みをよりいっそう美しく引き立てていた。

FIFA World Cup Final Game

It was the day for the final game of FIFA world cup, France VS Croatia. I am not a big fan of it but  found the public TV surrounded by a lot of people. I was just so interested in how people react for goals, so I decided to stay ther to draw people watching the game.

Later, a little girls came to me. She was first looking at me drawing, so I asked her if she wants to draw by giving her my brush. Then, her younger sister joined us. Obviously, they got bored of watching the game. Instead, we had a lot of fun drawing together:)

FIFAワールドカップ最終戦、フランス対クロアチア。私自身はサッカーファンというわけでもないのだが、外国人がゴールにどう反応するのかが見たくて、そこで絵を描くことに。リスボンのパブリックビューイングにて。

少し時間が経って、明らかにサッカー観戦に飽き飽きしたのであろう小さなフランス人の女の子が私のそばに寄って着て、絵を描くのを見ていた。せっかくなので絵を描く？と私の筆を渡してみる。彼女の妹も参加して、一緒にお絵かきを楽しんだ。旅一番のいい思い出、小さなフランス人のお友達ができました。

Botanical Garden in Lisbon

One day, I spent long time drawing plants at Jardim Botanico da Universidade de Lisboa.
There were so many plants I've never seen, all of them were so so beautiful even if it was heavily rainy at the end.


リスボンにある植物園で珍しい植物を描いて過ごした日。
最後はとんでもなく激しい雨が降ってきてしまったけど、見たことのない様々な植物があって、どれもとてもとても美しかったな。

The View from the window

Only except thousand of pigeons in public and street spray doodle, everywhere in Lisbon is so so pretty. The beautiful contrast of traditional stone paving and colorful tile wall makes me feel excited al the time. Traditional things in Japan usually tend to have simple and quiet colors such as gray, but here everything is colorful. I really enjoyed the difference between countries.

It was already dramatically beautiful during the daytime, so I was wondering how lovely it would be when it's night or early morning...
I tried to capture the moment by drawing with Goache which I am not good at.

えげつない量の鳩と情緒を台無しにする大量の落書きを除けば、あっちもこっちもワクワクするほど可愛らしい路地が続くリスボン。伝統の石畳とタイル貼りの壁はそれはそれは色彩豊かで美しく、同じ伝統でも渋めに仕上がる日本とは全く異なる色合いを放っていて、私にとってはそれはそれは新鮮だった。

日中こんなに美しいなら、夕方や朝方は一体どんなにドラマチックなんだろうと思っていたけれど、やっぱり美しかった…！

朝イチ、旅イチのスケッチは苦手なガッシュにトライ。

Tourism Spots

From about 40 mins by bus from Lisbon, there's a national heritage named Mosteiro dos Jeromimos.
It is a huge old building with the church standing nearby the sea. One of most surprising things I knew is the reason why they build this... they build this to commemorate the great achievement of Age of Discovery. I've visited world's famous churches before but I think this one was quite huge and  magestic.

later, I visited the Tower of Belem. "Even if you have a ticket, you gonna have to wait here on this line" I heard, so I waited for about an hour... I kind of found the sign says "online ticket holder,
Yes, I didn't have to wait at all...which I should've check before.
I said to myself, it was OK because could've spent time on drawing even thought it was freaking cold!

リスボンのメイン地区からバスで40分くらいのベレン地区に、ジェロニモス修道院というという世界遺産がある。海のすぐそばにそびえ立つその石造りの
巨大な建物で、中には教会なんかがあるのだが、それより何より驚くのが、この建物が作られた目的。なんと、大航海時代の偉業を称えることために建てられたのだとか。

誰かの功績を称えるためにこれほどの大きな建造物を作るとは、色々な意味で衝撃的。今まで色々な教会などは見てきたつもりだったけど、これほど規模の大きいものはなかなかないと思う。

その後、近くにある同じく世界遺産のベレンの塔を見に行った。「ネットチケット持ってる人も並んでるらしいよ」前の人に聞いたので大人しく入場口に並んでいると、1時間後…「チケットお持ちの方はこちら」という文字が。
全然誰も並んでいない方からすぐに入れたんだという衝撃。やはり最初に確認しに行くべきだったのだ。
7月とは思えぬ寒空の中、凍えながら耐えていたこの1時間は一体…と思ったけれど、スケッチができたのでよかったのかな！


 

1st City Visit Lisbon

The first city I visited was Lisbon where I heard it's so beautiful and everything is so cheap.
I shared a taxi from airport to city and heard all the history or tourist information of Lisbon.
He kindly taught me how to get the train ticket. I felt so lucky...!

I book my stays through Airbnb which I use for very first time. I was really nervous to ring the bell of someones house. However, people were so nice to come to help me find the right door. I didn't even need to ask. It is true that Portuguese are so so kind, I was very surprised at the difference with Tokyo. My host used full Portuguese to explain the housing rules, which means I had no idea what she said... I just made up my mind to not to mess the room. Hope it will be fine, I thought.

Lisbon is located nearby the sea with a lot of ups and downs. It is very hard for walking, but such a  beautiful city view. Because I could mostly always find the sea somewhere, it was very easy for me to look around the city without getting lost.

I spent long time drawing them under the unbelievably beautiful blue sky...

旅の最初の目的地はリスボン。

噂では街並みが美しく、とても物価が安いとのこと。

空港から市内までは相乗りタクシーで向かうこと
に。現地の方に観光スポットを教えてもらうだけでなく、メトロ切符の買い方等々も教えていただけるという嬉しすぎる好スタート！

またしてもお初で利用するAirbnbで予約していた市内の民泊宿。人様のお家の空き部屋をお借りするわけですが、まずは家を見つけてベルを鳴らさなくてはいけないという、初めてには少し緊張するシステムになっている。

それらしきドアまで到達するも、ドアがわからずに「？」でいると、おじさまが声をかけてくれた。東京と違ってバンバン声かけて大丈夫だよ！というのは、やはり本当らしい。お家の説明はフルポル語で全くわからなかったので、常識的に失礼のないように生活しようと改めて心に誓う。そしていざ街中へ…！

リスボンは海岸沿いで、とにかく四方八方が半端じゃない起伏の連続なので、足腰には酷だが、見た目はまるで絵画のような絶景が広がる美しい街。それほど大きな街ではないので、海を基準に考えればさほど迷うこともない。

街中には、外国ではよく見るけど日本ではなかなか遭遇しないストリートパフォーマーの方々がたくさん…！嘘のような晴れやかな青空の下、デッサンを満喫できてとても嬉しい初日！

My Summer Journey.

For a little turning point of my life, I decided to go on the trip for a while on somewhere colorful and having good food. Spain is always the country I've been dreaming to visit, then my friend recommended me Portugal. It's right next to Spain, and worth visiting he said.

Here's my journal of 38 days trip in wonderful Portugal and Spain with sketches, illustrations and talking to myself notes. I write both in English and Japanese here because I want to tell my stories to many people but Japanese ver would be funnier, I guess.

10th July-

My flight was Emirates from Tokyo - Dubai - Lisbon. Having a huge back pack, going to the airport alone. As I heard as a rumor, flight with Emirates was so amazing with Arabic scent and CAs. They even have so many movie lineups which make me so excited!

Because I got so excited about eating or watching movies, 11 hours flight seems not long for me.
Dubai International Airport was quite huge as I've heard, it took 20 mins to for me go to to the next gate. I had 4 hours for transfer, but time flies fast always...
It will soon be time to arrive my first visit city, Lisbon!!

人生のちょっとした転機ということで、旅に出ることを決めた私。時間だけはたっぷりあるので、せっかくなので遠い国へ行きたかった。国はどこに行こうかな？ということで、唯一決まっていたことが「カラフルで食べ物の美味しい国に行く」ということ。

ずっと前から行きたかったスペインを拠点に考え、スペインに近いし行く価値あるから！と友人に勧められたポルトガルでファイナルアンサーすることに！

これは、スケッチ、イラスト、独り言メモたっぷりの３８日間のポルトガル − スペイン旅の日記です。たくさんの方に読んでいただきたかったので日本語と英語で書きますが、日本語の方がおもろい仕上がりになっているかと思います。

7日10日-

行きのフライトはエミレーツ航空で、ドバイ経由リスボン行き。
大きなバックパックを背負い、一人空港へ向かうことに。

お初のエミレーツ航空は、噂通り素晴らしく、入るなりアラビアンな香りが漂い、アラビアン風の制服を着たのCAさんがお出迎えするという小洒落た演出の数々。映画好きの私は、まさかの映画ラインナップの豊富さに驚嘆。
美しい東京の夜景を目に焼き付けながらも、私の心は既に映画でいっぱい。
今回のフライトのムービーチョイスは、リメンバーミー、バグズライフ。（フライト約11時間）

映画や食事に熱中していたおかげであっという間にドバイ空港へ。話には聞いていたけど、やはり空港内はとても広く、次のゲートに着くまでに徒歩で２０分くらい歩くことに。遅延や迷子を加味すると、やはり３−４時間の乗り継ぎブランクがベスト。
ゲートを確認し、お茶してスケッチしているだけですぐに時間は経ってしまうもの。あっという間に搭乗時間に。

引き続きリスボン行きエミレーツ便へ乗り込み、引き続きトイストーリー、犬ヶ島、ライオンキングを堪能。いよいよ待ちに待った上陸の瞬間が…！
